ESSENTIAL OILS IN SKINCARE: WHAT WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT

Natural Is Not Always Gentle.

Somewhere along the way, natural became synonymous with safe; clean, better etc.

But nature holds both medicine and intensity, and concentration always matters. When we hyper concentrate parts of a plant, we are no longer working with it in its original context. And when it comes to skin, context is everything.

At Flora x Fauna, I built this brand on a quieter belief that skincare should support the skin’s ecology rather than stimulate it into submission. It should nourish deeply, respect the barrier, and consider what happens not just today, but over years of daily use.

In a market filled with beautifully branded natural products, the more important question is not whether something is plant-based or "natural". It is how that plant is prepared and how it interacts with the body over time.

What Essential Oils Actually Are

Essential oils are not whole plants. They are the result of steam distillation or pressing that isolates volatile aromatic compounds from a plant’s chemistry. It can take large amounts of plant material to create a very small bottle of essential oil, leaving behind an extremely concentrated fraction composed mostly of terpenes and other aromatic molecules.

Because these compounds are lipophilic, they penetrate the skin easily. This quick penetration is often framed as a benefit, and it can create an immediate sensory experience that feels active and effective. But penetration alone does not equal nourishment, and intensity does not always translate to long-term support.

Many essential oils are classified as potential sensitizers, which means the likelihood of irritation increases with repeated exposure. That irritation does not always appear dramatically. Sometimes it builds slowly as cumulative stress on the barrier. Lavender and tea tree oil have also been studied for potential endocrine-disrupting effects in certain contexts. They are biologically active compounds, and biologically active compounds deserve respect.

Your skin is an organ that absorbs and communicates with your immune and endocrine systems. What you apply daily becomes part of that physiological conversation.

Barrier Health and Micro-Inflammation

The skin barrier is a carefully organized structure made up of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids arranged in a precise matrix. Its job is to regulate hydration, prevent excessive water loss, and protect against environmental stressors.

When that matrix is disrupted, even subtly, transepidermal water loss increases and inflammation rises. This does not always present as redness or a rash. It can show up as persistent dryness that never fully resolves, breakouts that seem hormonal but are actually barrier-based, or skin that becomes progressively more reactive over time.

Chronic low-grade irritation, often referred to as micro-inflammation, accelerates visible aging because inflammation breaks down collagen and weakens the skin’s structural integrity. Calm, supported skin tends to age more gracefully because it is not constantly diverting energy toward repair.

A product that feels stimulating can sometimes be creating the very imbalance it promises to fix.

Whole-Plant Infusions Versus Concentrated Compounds

There is another way to work with plants that honors their complexity rather than isolating their most volatile fractions.

Instead of distilling essential oils, we practice slow oil infusions. Whole petals, leaves, resins, and roots are steeped into nourishing oils over time, allowing fat-soluble vitamins, carotenoids, flavonoids, and plant sterols to gently migrate into the carrier oil. This process preserves a broader spectrum of the plant’s chemistry while keeping the overall profile balanced and skin-compatible.

Essential oils represent a narrow slice of a plant’s identity. Infusions represent the plant in its whole context. It takes time.

Infused oils still carry a natural scent, but it is softer and more integrated. The experience remains sensory and grounding without overwhelming the skin or nervous system. It is the difference between intensity and steadiness, between stimulation and nourishment.

This approach is slower and more labor-intensive, and it requires small batch production and patience. But it aligns with how the body heals, which is rarely through force and almost always through consistent support.

Hormone-Safe Skincare and Cumulative Exposure

Hormone health is shaped by many factors, including daily topical exposure. The skin readily absorbs what we apply, and over time those exposures accumulate.

Essential oils are concentrated bioactive substances. For individuals navigating hormone imbalances, autoimmune conditions, pregnancy, or heightened sensitivity, reducing unnecessary volatility can make a meaningful difference. Even for those without obvious sensitivities, lowering overall chemical load is a reasonable and preventative approach.

The issue is not always a single product but in the layering of multiple stimulating ingredients across cleansers, serums, moisturizers, and body products used day after day. Over months and years, that cumulative exposure can influence barrier stability and inflammatory tone.

However, sometimes the results of inflammation are almost instant.

We formulate without essential oils not because they are trendy to avoid, but because they are not essential for effective barrier repair or deep nourishment. Removing them allows the skin to function without constant adaptation to irritation.

Transparency in Method and Pricing

Many natural skincare brands emphasize purity and traditional ingredients. There is a natural skincare brand with "Pure" in their name, they have cultivated a strong following with essential oil-based formulas and a clean beauty ethos.

We respect the shared desire to move away from synthetic fragrance and questionable additives. That shift has helped reshape the industry in important ways.

Where we differ is in preparation and philosophy. Infusion-based skincare requires sourcing whole plant material, steeping it for weeks, monitoring extraction, and producing in small batches. It is a slower and more hands-on process than incorporating concentrated essential oils into a base formula.

Despite this labor-intensive method, we intentionally keep our pricing accessible. Thoughtful, whole-plant formulation should not be reserved for a luxury tier. Our commitment is to integrity in both ingredients and cost.

We also just recently introduced mini sizes available for all products, besides our Lip Nectar. This gives you the opportunity to try the formulations for yourself and see what you think. It also allows you to travel with your favorites easily.

The Flora x Fauna Philosophy of Rewilded Beauty

Rewilded beauty is about working with the body rather than overriding it. It draws from ancestral preparation methods and respects biological limits, understanding that the skin thrives on compatibility and consistency.

Instead of chasing intensity or trends, we focus on biocompatible lipids, barrier repair, and gentle botanical synergy. The goal is not to create a dramatic reaction but to cultivate steady resilience.

Skin does not need to be shocked into radiance. It needs to be supported into balance.

When the barrier is intact and inflammation is low, the glow that emerges is different. It is not fleeting or reactive. It is stable, calm, and sustainable.

Calm Skin Ages Better. Quiet Formulas Perform Longer.

The beauty industry often rewards immediacy and sensory impact. Strong scent and visible stimulation can feel convincing in the moment. But longevity belongs to formulas that respect the skin’s physiology and support it consistently over time.

At Flora x Fauna, we choose infusion over isolation and harmony over hype. We believe that natural ingredients deserve thoughtful preparation, and that gentleness is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Natural is not always gentle, and volatile is not always wise. Over time, your skin will reflect the difference.
